Industrial Archaeology

The picturesque landscape around Biggin belies the area's rich industrial heritage.

Copper and lead mining goes back to the bronze age.

Arkwright's Mill at cromford was the dawn of the Industrial revolution.

The Cromford and High Peak railway, passing within a mile of Biggin, was one of the worlds first.

Ecton Hill copper mine, two miles from Biggin, at one time produced 10% of Englands copper, and pioneered the use of Boulton and Watt beam engines for drainage.
