Biggin Hall Weddings
Biggin Hall offers the perfect venue for small bespoke daytime weddings from 10 people up to a maximum of around 50.
We offer ceremonies in the Hotel or in our African Gazebo.
Numbers & Timings
Suggested timings for your Wedding Day could be:
11.30 -12 Noon - Civil Ceremony;
12.30 - 1.30 - Reception drinks & Photos
1.30 - Lunch
3.30 - Speeches and Cake cutting
5.00-5.30 - Guests depart
The above times are a guideline only but we require guests to have vacated Biggin Hall by 5.30pm. You may also wish to have the marriage ceremony in a church nearby but we recommend you plan to eat no later than 2.00pm.
The village hall in Biggin by Hartington is modern and well equipped and has been used on many occasions for evening functions – we are able to offer bar and catering facilities for your evening function.
By far and away the biggest asset Biggin Hall has to offer for a Bride and Groom on their wedding day is our stunning location.
The grounds, the house and the surrounding countryside are pretty much at your disposal for your wedding day.
Biggin Hall receives many requests for weddings and we are unable to accept them all – we make every effort to tailor your wedding to our surroundings – some weddings are therefore not suitable for this venue.
Our costs are based on the fact that you are not just paying for a meal in a hotel but to have your entire day planned & organized for you, the house and grounds put at your disposal and food and drink served by our staff. Your wedding will also be overseen by Emma Shimwell and Katherine Leslie who both have many years experience in running events on a regular basis.
Costs for 2017 will be around £70 a person. This would increase if very expensive food was requested or more than three courses are requested.
To give some idea of costs, I have drawn up an imaginary bill for a couple and 38 guests who have the following requirements:
Arrival Drinks – Pimms/Sparkling Wine
Wedding Breakfast for 40
House Wine with the meal
Civil Ceremony £1,500.00
Drinks on Arrival £240.00
Wedding Breakfast 40 @ £50 £2,000.00
House Wine - 20 bottles @ £15 £300.00
Sole use of Biggin Hall for the Civil Ceremony only will be £1,000.00
Food & Drink
We have no set Wedding Breakfast menus, we prefer to discuss what you really like to eat – your favourite dishes - and come up with a menu that suits you and the time of the year. That way you can choose from fresh and ingredients that are in season. By having a look at our sample lunch and dinner menus you will get some idea as to what we can do.
Three courses will cost you in the region of £50 per person for a Wedding Breakfast, we can of course do a buffet should you wish at the same price.
Biggin Hall does not offer set 'drinks packages', you pay for as much or as little you and your friends drink. Your arrival drinks can either be served on the croquet lawn or in our library if the weather is not fine. Suggestions for drinks along with our current prices are listed below;
House Wine – Dry White, Red or Rose £15
Gremillet Brut Selection Champagne £39
Rose Spumante Le Dolci Colline £19.95
Jug of Pimm's £18.00
Jug of Mulled Wine £16
Elderflower Pressé Jug £7.50
Jug of Orange Juice £6.00
All of the above will serve around five to six glasses. Our experience shows that a budget of between £10-£15 per head, based on house wine with lunch and Prosecco or Pimm's for the arrival drinks.
If you wish to bring your own Wine or Champagne we make a charge of £12 per bottle. Have a look at our wine list to see the full range of over 25 wines we offer.
Table & Room Layout
Table layouts will be discussed with our wedding co-ordinator – we have various table plans to suit most weddings but will of course tailor the room exactly to your requirements.
Evening Events & Hotel Takeover
There have been some truly fantastic house parties at Biggin Hall and people still talk about them years later, this house just lends itself to such an event. If you are having an evening party we can cater for up to 80 people.
The only way we can achieve this for you is for you to book. all 21 bedrooms (for two nights if its a Saturday night) and in addition to booking the rooms you will be asked to pay a fee for exclusive use of the hotel.
Biggin Hall is available for exclusive use for certain dates during the year for which the fee is currently £4000 per day. This fee is in addition to the cost of the rooms, food, drink and any other costs.
It will guarantee that you have exclusive use of the hotel and grounds.
This may sound like an expensive undertaking but if your guests pay for their own rooms, you will probably find that this is cheaper than putting up a marquee in your garden and hiring caterers, generators, portable loos, a dance floor etc etc.
For further details of these packages please call or email Biggin Hall.
Biggin Hall is licensed to hold Civil Wedding Ceremonies in our Drawing Room or The African Gazebo at the bottom of the lawn, a lovely period room with a fireplace, in which we can seat up to around 40 with standing room for a few more.
The Ceremony is conducted by the Bakewell Registrar - Mrs Yvonne Thorburn who can be contacted on 01629 535261. It is important that you check that the Registrar is available before you confirm you wish to go ahead with your wedding at Biggin Hall.
You have the option of having live music, say a harpist, play during your ceremony or we can play your chosen tracks on CD.
The fee for using Biggin Hall for the Ceremony is £500. The Registrar will also charge a fee for conducting the ceremony. A civil wedding ceremony lasts about 20-25 minutes. The cost for using Biggin Hall just for the ceremony is £1000.
Once you have come up to the hotel to discuss your wedding we draw up a plan of action for the day outlining what is happening when, what the menu is and what the costs are.

Dogs are accepted in certain areas of the hotel, but must be kept under control at all times and not allowed to roam unsupervised. Please clean up after your dog.
Hired/brought in furniture/marquees etc:
Any hired or brought in goods, in particular chairs, tables and marquees cannot be delivered prior to the hire period, and must be collected by the end
of the hire period.
This is especially important to plan for if your hire starts on or finishes on a bank holiday as hire companies may find it difficult to collect or deliver on a bank holiday. We may be able to help, but only by prior written agreement.
Biggin Hall accepts no liability for lost or damaged property belonging to the hirer or any of their guests. Any electrical items brought into the fort must be in safe working order and
comply with all British Standards.
Floral arrangements are welcome, but fixings may not be put into the walls, arches or fabric of the building without our specific permission - be warned that there are electric cables concealed in the stonework pointing. No picking or use of any of the flowers or greenery on our property including our drive is allowed.
Registration of Marriages where applicable):
The first point of contact should be with our local Registrar at Bakewell - 01629 535261 - as bookings can only be made through that office.
All arrangements with the Registrar’s Office are entirely the responsibility of the engaged couple, and it is vitally important that they complete all necessary matters within the time scales required by the Registrar’s Office, and to the Registrar’s entire satisfaction.
An important element of the procedure is the formal interview of the bride & groom prior to the ceremony to check that details are unchanged; the registrar requires a private room to be set aside for 30 minutes prior to the ceremony with a table & two chairs: this is normally the table situated directly outside the upper Bridal bedroom.
Biggin Hall accepts no responsibility for a refusal or failure on the part of the Registrar Service to carry out a marriage ceremony, and the hire of the hall and obligations to complete the booking will remain unaffected.
If choosing to marry in the Gazebo – this is at the discretion of the Registrar on
the day, so if the weather is wet or windy, an alternative should be planned for.
In the event that you have to cancel your booking, your deposit will be forfeit and you will still be liable for the final due payment as detailed in your booking confirmation.
We will make every effort to re-book the Hall for your period. You will be liable to pay the difference if, at our own sole discretion, if we decide to accept a price lower than the balance of the hire charge. We will only cancel the booking if Biggin Hall is unusable due to unforeseen circumstances. Our liability will be limited to the extent of the monies, without interest, that you have already paid us.
Change of Date:
Once the initial deposit has been received the date of the booking is fixed as agreed. We accept no obligation to change the date of the booking, but we may agree to do so, at our sole discretion, and not normally within a period of eight months before the booking date.
Event insurance is compulsory and must be paid for with the initial deposit. A range of cover is available at different costs, but £5,000,000 public liability is the minimum acceptable. We reserve the right
to withhold part or all of the security deposits for infringement of the above conditions.
Biggin Hall is a NON SMOKING venue.
In accordance with current legislation no smoking inside the Hall is allowed.
